Compare this to Mettaton - sure, he constantly erects lavish monuments and glorious specials celebrating himself, but unlike Papyrus, they never feel forced. Papyrus mentions how GREAT he is at every opportunity - not in a way that belittles others, though, but in a way that sounds more like he’s reminding himself just as much as he’s reminding you. But on top of that, his wall of confidence and optimism does come off as forced at times, especially with how often he brings it up - and, luckily, to prove this point, Undertale provides an excellent comparison point in the form of another character who is genuinely self-centered, vain, and obscenely confident - Mettaton. There’s also the King Papyrus ending, with Papyrus’s quiet admission that keeping up the optimism when the entire Underground is depending on him so much is exhausting. He does a pretty good job of hiding it, with his wall of optimism, but there’s cracks here and there - the moment after his fight where he breaks down, for instance, as well as various discrepancies in his dialogue when he thinks the human isn’t listening versus when he speaks to them directly (he freely admits to Sans that he isn’t popular *yet*, but he insists that he has LOADS of friends before he fights you). Papyrus’s biggest problem, as I’ve said in other posts, is that he’s actually really insecure - his self confidence is pretty low. If anything, his is a coping method, and one that does seem to be doing him a lot of good - it’s not perfect, though. So, back to masks again because look this motif isn’t going away it’s the easiest way for me to visualize these things and also shut up: Papyrus knows he’s wearing a mask, and does so very intentionally, but his mask is honestly not as unhealthy or detrimental as that of others. And an additional thank-you to everyone who’s messaged me their own observations if I forget to credit someone for something they pointed out to me, please let me know and I’ll try and add that in! I mean, I know this isn’t MLA or something, but that doesn’t mean really in-depth character analyses aren’t team efforts on some level, right?ĪND ONCE AGAIN: BIG GIGANTIC HUGEMONGUS SPOILER WARNING FOR LIKE THE ENTIRE GAME

But I’ll try to keep each of their essays focused without going off on tangents too hard!Īlso, I’d like to thank some of the folks who’ve reblogged my posts talking about Papyrus and/or Sans a lot of your tags have helped me figure stuff out I wouldn’t have otherwise noticed! In particular who tumblr is not letting me properly so I’ll probably just PM you a thanks but your tags def pointed out stuff I’m gonna be borrowing for this, hope you don’t mind! (I’ll point out exactly what it is you noticed that I missed). I do switch up my routine every so often, because being predictable is a good way to get yourself dusted. This one and Sans’s will probably feature a fair amount of retreading of ideas I’ve brought up about them before, and their scripts will also have a lot of crossover moments because honestly analyzing either of them in a vacuum is kind of hard - the two have a great deal of influence over and impact on each other. Sans usually goes to bed after that, the lazy bastard, but I stay up and do paperwork and watch MTTV. “Anyway, after that, Undyne and I spar for a while, then I do my rounds again and head home to make dinner. And if he needs the Judge, he just summons Sans himself.” His claws dig into his humeri. “It’s rare for the king to pass down any orders, though. His demeanor doesn’t noticeably change, but there’s an air of discomfort around him. Usually Lieutenant Undyne and I have lunch and discuss the affairs of the Royal Guard and…any…orders from the king for the day.” If there were any deaths overnight, I take account and report them. After we eat, I patrol Snowdin for a couple hours, making sure no monsters have done anything stupid while I was busy.

“Well, I start by waking up Sans, usually by having to push the dumbass out of bed, then make breakfast. “A good question! An excellent training regimine is important for any budding warrior.
